In the 80s, Dutchman Frans Afman became the most important banker in Hollywood and one of the most powerful men in the business. Through Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis he was introduced to the world of filmmaking and together they created a system of financing that revolutionized the independent film industry in Hollywood, called pre sales.
For over a decade Frans was instrumental in both financing films such as ‘Platoon’, ‘The Terminator’ and ‘Dances with Wolves’; as well as in the rise of the leading independent production companies such as Cannon, Hemdale and Carolco.
As the success grew, ambition turned into greed and people of dubious character began to involve themselves in the independent film industry. Such as Giancarlo Parretti, a former Italian waiter turned investor. Immediately, Frans did not trust Parretti, but his boss at Credit Lyonnais ruled against him. Parretti became a major player in the independent film business and took over MGM with money he had lent from Credit Lyonnais. Frans left the bank in protest. It wasn’t long before Paretti and MGM started losing billions leading both the studio and bank into bankruptcy.
And so the Dutch banker left the stage as swiftly as he had entered, but not without leaving behind a great legacy of independent films and forever changing the way films are financed.
Director Rozemyn Afman tells the story of her father’s life and times, and how he not only influenced the world of filmmaking in Hollywood, but also her own life.

Rozemyn Afman (1983) studied at the International Center of Photography in New York and attended classes in film directing at The New York Film Academy.
She is the daughter of Frans Afman, the Hollywood Banker and subject of her documentary. He passed on his love for film to her and introduced her to the people and machinations of the film industry.
Upon hearing the news of Frans’ terminal illness in October 2010, she moved back to Amsterdam to aid him. During this emotional time she was inspired to tell his life story. This is Rozemyn’s first documentary as a director.
